Scientists say cheetahs may be on the brink of extinction.

An international team of researchers analyzed cheetah populations in a large swath of territory, which included Namibia, Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

The area is home to the largest population of free-ranging cheetahs.

According to the team’s findings published in December 11th, in the journal Peer J, there were less than 3600 adult cheetahs in the territory.

That is less than half the number of researchers projected in a population assessment published last year.

Scientists say the low numbers are a sign that more needs to be done to protect the animals.

They’re calling for the International Union for Conservation of Nature to change the status of cheetahs from vulnerable to endangered.

Others of the study said the reclassification could boost awareness about the animals plight and “open more avenues to fund conservation and population monitoring efforts."
