Some reindeer probably do have red noses, but this may be due to the presence of these little creatures
these little flies called, affectionately, “snot bots”, the reindeer botflies.
The female adult botfly will fly along and she squirts the larvae up the nostrils of the reindeer.
The larva then goes down the throat and attaches at the base of the throat where it starts feeding.
When the larva gets to about two or three centimetres, this is when it wants to leave its host.
So what it does is it irritates the lining of the throat, causing the reindeer to either snot it out or cough it out.
So we always kind of feel sorry for Rudolph, but maybe he’s upset because of these little botflies, rather than the other reindeer.
