Scientists like to tell us that their research is perfectly objective that it can’t be sexist. There’s no room for in the method.
But this isn’t true. Science has often got women wrong.
In the study of human biology and behaviour, it’s dangerously easy for prejudice to affect research.
Science has been tainted by sexism for hundreds of years.
Charles Darwin believed that women were born intellectually inferior to men.
Even today, theories suffer from bias. Unconscious bias can be seen in traditionally male-dominated disciplines.
In animal biology, across all species, there’s oddly more research on male sexual organs than there is on female ones.
Even in medicine, research sometimes neglects probelms that affect only women, such as period pain.
What’s more of a problem is outright sexism.
In the space between what the evidence says and what it means, in the realm of hypothesis, or sometimes just speculation, scientists can protect their biased assumptions.
And if they reinforce stereotypes these sexist theories tend to stick, even when a wealth of evidence contradicts them.
For example, many neuroscientists cling to the notion that male and female brains are fundamentally different, implying that sexual equality is impossible because we just don’t think the same.
In evolutionary psychology, some male researchers insist that hunting by men is what drove up human intelligence in our evolutionary past.
Others, that the female menopause evolved because no man of any age find older women attractive.
These ideas are being challenged by good evidence-based research, particularly carried out by women.
But they haven’t disappeared. For science to maintain the public’s trust, it must own up to its problems.
Scientists must accept that they are not always objective, and not always fair.
